From Software Company to Software Company
This doesn’t sound like much of a career transition, but it was. Steve was very unhappy in his work when he came to see me. He had already changed jobs a handful of times and wasn’t sure if he should change jobs again or change careers. Maybe he just had a terminally dissatisfied personality, he thought.
Our work together revealed that his work in software sales wasn’t the problem. His particular position within this particular company was the problem. His expertise in outside sales and in training and motivating sales people landed him — stranded him — right where he didn’t want to be: inside! Further, he was painfully at odds with the values and business practices of the company he was working for.
With clarity about what an optimal position and company would be for him, he was able to find it. The icing on the cake turned out to be that the job, via a recruiter, actually found him. But without the clarity we achieved, would he have been able to recognize the right job, interview successfully for it, and go for it with certainty? He doesn’t think so.
